Member Since: 2007 Media Specialties: Fiber;Glass; City: State Road State: North Carolina County: Surry County, NC Bio: Mary Mascenik Apprentice in Glass “Coordinator” could easily be Mary’s middle name. After all, she’s raised four children, built a new home, brought buyer and seller together in real estate transactions, led a Girl Scout troop, and written public relations articles for a company newspaper. She even dehydrated an eight-week supply of food, boxed it up and sent it off to nine post offices in Alaska, where it fed husband Tom and herself throughout a two-month backpacking trip there. It’s only natural that she currently serves as the Coordinator of the Guild’s Mentor-Apprentice Program. Mary is an accomplished seamstress, having grown from doll clothes to wedding dress, slipcovers to window treatments. Under the name Marielle, her silk handbags have been sold here at the Guild’s shop and at the Maypop Gallery in Greensboro. A love of color and light brings her to the glass apprenticeship offered by master artisan Barbara Elmore. Mary has worked in stained glass for about five years, with a focus on small to moderately sized window pieces. Under Barbara’s guidance, she is fusing and slumping glass in a kiln, creating dimensional work. “I’m thrilled to be sculpting in glass,” says Mary of the warm glass process. Mary is a past president of the Foothills Arts Council and the Yadkin Valley Garden Club. She has been a student of Italian language at North Carolina School of the Arts and at Wake Forest University. She is a graduate of Douglass College of Rutgers University. She lives in State Road with Tom, her husband of 36 years, a retired neurologist. Their passions are gardening, theater, travel, cooking and their five grandchildren.
