After receiving a scholarship to study at Penland, she embarked on a 2-year apprenticeship with the German-trained blacksmith, Bernd Mergener of Winston-Salem. Gail expanded her metal art skills at the John C. Campbell Folk School, where she received the Francis Whitaker Scholarship to study advanced blacksmithing. In 2004, she honed her architectural blacksmith skills at Penland, where she attended an 8-week work study program to create her nature-inspired garden gate. Gail’s work has been featured in various shows at AAWS. Treasure Potts in Fancy Gap, VA is currently representing her work. She was commissioned to design and fabricate metalwork for the Guth Chapel at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Elkin, NC. Locally, she designed and constructed decorative ironwork for Knit Picky Yarn Shop in Winston-Salem. Her sculpture is featured in private collections in New York, Arizona, Washington, DC, as well as throughout North Carolina. Artist’s Statement: The feminine forms of nature and the mystical life of the dream world play a big part in my work as a metal artist. I try to allow the scraps of metal to guide me into the shapes they want to be made into, much like the Aborigines say the dream is always dreaming. Some of my works combine glass, stone and other materials. Others are pure forged metal or hammered metal. I love to work with other artist blacksmiths, since sharing ideas and creating pieces together only enhances my skills and my enjoyment of the creative process. As a female blacksmith artist, I am enjoying bringing to life the feminine forms that metal can take on in a traditionally masculine world of metal art.
