Member Since: 2006 Media Specialties: Paper; City: Clemmons State: North Carolina County: Forsyth County, NC Bio: Paper Dreams Studio Clemmons NC I am a Paper Artist Paper is my art medium of choice Collage, sculpted paper, and paper clay dolls I do all of the above and delight in the different ways paper can be used I am best known for my paper cutting Paper cutting is not exclusively that funny German word Scherenschnitte (translated is simply paper cutting There are many styles and techniques - Dutch, Polish, Mexican and English - all with their unique names and styles The origin of paper cutting is from China and is thousands of years old. Hans Christian Anderson and Matisse were both paper cutters - one best known for his writing, the other a painter - their cuttings were as original and unique as the artist The misunderstanding is that paper cutting is often thought of as a preprinted pattern With multiple copies and duplicate cuttings with no thought to originality or technique That is not correct A true paper cutter will take as much pride in their design and drawing abilities as they do their skill in cutting When a paper cutter takes their original design whether it is a pencil drawing or free style (no Image on paper) and carefully cuts away at each small detail it is often compared to as a sculptor of stone It's what you take away that creates the work of art I have a history of graphic arts which is helpful in the detailed design aspect of paper cutting I have been a member of the Guild of American Paper Cutters since 2000 I have been a featured artist in First Cut Magazine, and I have contributed to developing paper cutting programs for children in the States and in Christ Church, New Zealand Whether it is a personal piece or commissioned work, I always enjoy the challenge I often tell children when presenting a class to think of their scissors as a pencil turning and gliding along the paper creating a personal work of art with each snip.
